13/01/2008 vs Sheen Lions | Print |  E-mail

Venue: Imber Court
Result: 4-3
KO- 12: 40 pm

It was a massive game for Cheam Town FC and it was against our massive rivals, Sheen Lions, who are also in the race for the title.

The Conditions were shockingly bad and started the game against the wind - something very hard to do. Due to the afternoon kickoff, the ground was more or less unplayable through the middle so it had to go through the flanks, a hard job for Sammy C, Ozzie, Stefan and James. It was a slow start for Cheam Town and a rare mistake by Nick Beck Gave a Sheen striker a golden opportunity to score - due to a great finish, Ali Turpie could not save it.

The first 20 minutes were generally quite poor, only to concede another goal that shouldnt of been allowed. A freekick was given to Sheen 10 yards from the boxs and to the right, because of the strong winds, Chrissy Richards couldnt quite judge it properly, and put the ball out for a corner. When the corner came in, it was a very hard ball to defend with the wind aswell, and it fell to a Sheen striker that put the ball in the back of the net when another Sheen player was obstructing the Goalkeeper, Ali Turpie so he could not get up from a previous dive he made. After all the protests, the goal still stood.

After a string of nice passes starting from Sammy C to Conor Stanton, and some brute strength by Luke Smith, he managed to feed in Sean Hickey to get our first goal of the match. It was a very tidy finish and a team worked goal. With half time approaching, we knew that 2-1 would have been a respectable effort due to the hard conditions, but just on the brink of half time, Sheen Lions got a corner. With two attackers and two defenders in the way of goalkeeper Ali Turpie, it was hard to see the flight of the ball, but it was unexcusable, the corner managed to creep in with help of the wind. This made heads drop, but we knew we had the wind in the second half and that we had it in us to win.

When the second half begun, Cheam were well up for it. We were first to evey ball and second ball and we genuinly wanted it more than Sheen. We were moving the ball from left to right with ease. After a long two months, Alex Wynter had finally returned from a broken leg. With constantly applied pressure, Cheam were raining down on attacks. The ball broke free to Shaun who took the ball from the middle of the park out to the far right, he drove a hard cross in of which Luke Smith got a slight flick on, only to find Alex at the back post to fire in a simple tap in. A great impact from Alex Wynter.

It was a rare seen to see Sheen in our half, But when they were, they pushed players on to try and get goals. Sammy C, recently moved to right back dove in with a hard challenge and accidently conceded a free kick on the edge right side of the box. Chrissy  Richards got the tight line in order as iit was vital seeing as Sheen had so many players forward. As the ball came in, Ali Turpie made a big claim and had picked out Alex Wynter with a pin-point dropkick, only to take one bounce and Alex to finish it on the volley with style. The Scorer was 3-3.

The final 10 minutes were upon us and it was going to go to the wire, Cheam knew that we had the victory in us but it was always going to be tight. Cheam carried on piling on the pressure, pasing the ball from the back to the front. A pass from Oz found its way to Conor Stanton who gracefully dribbled past the Sheen defence and stuck a powerful shot towards the Sheen Goal, the keeper got a touch on it, but it was not enough to keep the ball out of the goal.

Cheam saw the rest of the game out with no more attacks from either side and the final result was, Cheam Town FC 4 - 3 Sheen Lions. A great Result and As Dave Owens said at the end, "THEY AD NUFFINK IN THA SECOND ALF EH BOYS?! GREAT RESULT"
