04/11/07 vs AFC Wimbledon (League Cup 2nd Rnd) | Print |  E-mail

Venue:  Kingston University, Tolworth
Result:  3-1
KO - 10:30AM

Afc Wimbledon has a big statue in football having won the Surrey Cup last season but Cheam Town showed we were no pushovers. Afc Wimbledon came at us from the off by running down the flanks and switching the ball from one side to the other. but we were fired up for this and closed down every ball at every opportunity.  The first chance came about 20 mins in, which fell to Sean Hickey who ran onto a through ball but the Afc Wimbledon defence missed the interception. Sean took a touch and shot low and hard but unfortunately hit the side netting.  Ryan Pepperall and Connor Stanton bossed the midfield by making crucial tackles and interceptions.

About 35 mins into the game Afc went one up due to a storming run from a midfielder who had a shot it looked like it was going wide but another one of the Afc attackers got a toe in and put the ball into bottom corner. This goal did not dishearten Cheam as we showed great character not to allow our heads to drop. Sean Hickey tried to take matters into his own hands by making a dazzling 30 yard run into the box dribbling past no fewer than 4 defenders, although under pressure from both keeper and defender Sean still managed to get a shot at goal which went just wide. There were appeals for a penalty from all the Cheam Town players because as Sean shot,  the keeper brought him down but our appeals to the referee resulted in nothing.

The first half was pretty even until Sean Hickey tried a 30 yard strike which hit the back of the net. 1-1 was the half time score line which was quite fare as the first half was even. At half time we had an opportunity to discuss our tactics and thoughts for the second half.

15 mins into the  second half was still neck and neck both teams creating chances but all to no avail. Afc Wimbledon made several changes including bringing on a enormous striker who looked like he should be trailing for the England rugby team. The only person to take up the challenge of marking him was our captain Chrissy Richards, who has been our most consistent performer all season.  About 20 mins into the half Afc Wimbledon took the lead with a scrappy dubious goal.

Afc took a corner which fell into the 6 yard box and after a header by an Afc player, the ball was heading for the net but Nick Beck jumped in to make an excellent clearance off the line. Unfortunately Cheam Town did not  clear the ball properly and this allowed Afc Wimbledon to put the ball back into the box.

When the ball came back in it fell kindly to an Afc Wimbledon player which everyone thought was offside, his shot went into the bottom corner and our protest to the referee came to no avail. But this still did not dishearten us as we still believed we could pull off a result.  We created a number of attacking moves which lead to chances but no goals.  Afc Wimbledon scored again 12 min from time a curler from outside the box. Cheam Town were 3-1 down but we still fought hard creating attacking moves, but time was just not on our side as it flew past.

A fantastic game to watch in truth could have gone either way and although we lost, the main thing is that everyone on the team showed great character and spirit which will lead us to greater things.
